April 18 We're now near Staniel Cay in the Exumas. We are anchored within eyesight of the famous Exuma pigs - pigs who live on an uninhabited island and have become a tourist attraction. Boats from resorts on Nassau and George Town arrive throughout the day for a 15 minute visit. Cameras out, pigs begging for food, tourists giggling, you get the picture. Mike and I went over early this morning and there were only a couple pigs near the shack/pen of sorts. After a minute, several large pigs started coming out from the brush, they've learned the boat motor sound and emerge looking for food. We also went yesterday, a couple pics are here. Later we dinghied to the town and walked about, went to the grocery store for a few items, looked at boat yards (hehehe) and ended at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club where we had appetizers and drinks for the rest of the afternoon. At 5:00, nearing low tide, we went to Thunderball Grotto (famous from the James Bond '60's movie) which is midway between our boat and Staniel Cay. The grotto is super cool! We lucked out with a group of people leaving as we arrived. Therefore, we were the only ones in the grotto for 15 minutes until several boats, each with 2 to 6 people, came. Being there on our own was fantastic since there was no one else kicking, creating bubbles, etc. The fish swim right up to you and then alongside - Sergeant Majors and Yellowtail Snappers by the hundreds! Tens of Angelfish and Bluehead Wrasse. Again, a shark just 6 feet beneath us. Not so scary since I've learned that these sharks are tame, one just need not be aggressive or interfere with its eating to avoid harm. We went back to the grotto at 8 this morning to take advantage of low tide, another great experience - the reef surrounding the grotto is fantastic. Again, no one else was there. As we left, a crew from one of the mega yachts came by asking us the lay of the land. He zipped off in his tender, presumably to fetch his owner and guests. I added a photo of a nearby mega yacht with all its toys.
