Our sail from Portsmouth to Coinjock was funny...a virtual parade of cruising boats making their way south. There's a lift bridge about 11 miles from Portsmouth/Norfolk which doesn't open for boaters between 6:30 and 8:30 am to accommodate rush hour. Therefore, there's usually a group of boats there at 8:30 that have made their way from the Norfolk area that morning. On this morning, the bridge wouldn't open because a railroad bridge, which is directly next to it, was in use. Once the train went through, the bridge attendant said she had to wait for another train which was 20-30 minutes away. So, we all waited over an hour to get through these bridges. It's quite amusing to have several boats idling, moving a bit, talking to each other about the predicament, and so on. By the time we got to a lock, maybe another 10 miles down, there were even more boats in the parade. It turned out that the lock didn't open for about 45 minutes because of a barge in the way. By the time we made it into the lock, there were over 20 boats waiting. We went in single file under the lockmaster's direction. A few boats even rafted off others! There were many bridges in this portion. Twice our antenna scraped the bridge (65' clearance with a 65' mast, counting the antenna). No worries - it bounced back!
